MASTER TEACHERS

Paul Chidlaw   1900 – 1989

Paul Chidlaw was born in 1900. As a young man he went to Paris to study with the world’s known artists of that day. He returned to Cincinnati and taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy and then at the Rookwood Pottery Buildings before taking up residence on Edgecliff’s campus of Xavier University where he was given a studio to work for the remaining years of his career. When I met Paul at age 80, I found him vibrant, painting with childlike vigor. When I asked how many days a week he painted in his studio, he said, “eight”. Paul lived and painted every day until his last breath in 1989

at age 89.

Roland Huston was a master teacher.

He taught me from 1987-2005.

Roland studied under Paul Chidlaw

at the Cincinnati Art Academy and continued

as his trusted friend and student long after

graduating from the Cincinnati Art Academy.

Roland was a true professional

until his passing in 2005 at age 69.

Everyone who knew and studied with

Roland will never forget his patience,

dedication and immense integrity.

He demanded excellence; we all grew

as artists under his strong

and loving instruction.
