Five Figures

“Five Figures”

36″ x  48″

acrylic on canvas

Why did this painting take 3 months to find it conclusion? Below you can see that the process is one of adjusting the drawing. I was constantly introducing various colors and then adjusting values to see the impact of these colors on the figures as well as the color on its neighboring color and then to the whole canvas. Until all the aspects of these relationships are in harmony, the painting is not finished.

‘”As you can see, the ninth photo shows you how and when I began to introduce direct, very strong color values. At this point I needed to find a way to bring the ‘five figures’ into one visual experience. The idea of inserting an ‘implied’ curtain to bring the ‘eye’ diagonally across the center was the surprise answer to the overall structure.

Back story: I was visiting a studio where artists and a “live” model were taking a break. The artists decided to adjust the sheer curtains on the set. I asked if the model would allow me to take some photos while she was helping the artists with the setup. The rest is history.
